Writing Workshop: Birth Stories *childcare included*

Writing Workshop:  Birth Stories

6 sessions: 9/10, 9/17, 9/24, 10/1, 10/8, 10/15, from 10am-12pm, with office hours 12-1 each week.   Childcare provided.

In this fast-paced, fun and impassioned writing intensive, you do the heretofore undoable:  write your birth story from start to finish.  Tapping into the rich material of your birthing experience, you do mini-exercises in class to recall the major plot points, characters of merit and various settings.  With as much guidance as you would like, you choose the genre and structure that best suits the telling of your story.  Come out of the course with your very own piece of creative non-fiction!  Each class there will be a lecture, an individual portion with time to write and a group reading and commentary.  There will be one office hour after each class for optional writing assistance and you have the option to submit writing for detailed feedback to me on a weekly basis.

You will be expected to write 1-2 pages a day (or 10 pages a week) at home to complete your 60 page manuscript by the end of the 6 weeks. If you have trouble writing on your own or you know that you need outside accountability to finish the assignments, show up for optional virtual write-ins, Tuesdays and Thursdays at noon where you call into a conference, share your intention with others & write for 30 minutes.

Sarah has fancied herself a writer since the age of 8, when she wrote stories about inquisitive children adventuring into seemingly abandoned houses, that turned out to be “haunted” by good natured elders.  After some legitimate study of English Literature, Creative Writing, Composition/Rhetoric, some teaching at the college level, and nearly 3 decades of fantasizing, she is finally settled into her routine writing practice.

In 2016, she went into business as a writing coach to support writers in creating & cultivating their own writing practice.  She is Organizer for A Gentle Kick in the Ass Meetup, a September through May Writing Group.  One of Sarah’s dream projects is to create a legitimate encyclopedic, birthing resource on the internet.  Sarah lives in Brooklyn with her husband, two daughters and a goldfish.
