Intro to Machine Sewing (grades 3-6)

Does your child dream of making her own dresses? Maybe he loves fabric or crafting, or maybe that sewing machine she begged for is still sitting in the box. This introduction to machine sewing will give your child the skills she'll need to start creating.

Through a series of fun and wearable projects students will learn the foundations of sewing by creating their own crafts and garments. Students will learn how to safely operate the machine, how to use essential sewing tools, how to read and cut simple patterns, and how to construct basic garments.

Projects include a personalized pin-cushion, an infinity tassel scarf, and an elastic waistband skirt. All tools and materials will be provided.

I am a local mom, former NYC teacher and a long time sewer. I bring to my classes my enduring fascination with sewing and crafting. I am still amazed that I can transform a simple piece of fabric and some thread into garments that become part of my life. There is a thrill in the work of sewing--laboring over the machine, fussing with the fabric and solving all the little the problems that arise-- that makes sewing uniquely engaging and rewarding. It is this thrill that I look to impart to young sewers in my classes.
